cakap cakap...Melbourne, Saturday morning.

Saturday : 9.33 AM Melbourne. Cold Winter morning...hovering below 10 degrees F...in my sarong, slippers....just finished breakfast...a large glass of ice tea infused with mango...Vietnamese bun toasted with cheese and Devondale salted butter in the oven to melt the cheese...a few minutes to catch up with World News on the BBC and now seated at my desk wanting to write....about K Hell, about life...about anything that will move me in the next few minutes as I allow my mind to wander where it wants.

It has been a while since I seriously did any work on this blog. My mind simply shut down over a month ago and I did not do anything to restart it. Except for a few cursory attempts at surfing the net to see what was happening outside our Fitzroy suburb the rest of my time gave been spent selfishly on my wife, my son and myself. You guys should do that once in a while. It invigorates the senses and gives you an overview as to what is really important in life....your life! Maybe now I am ready to blog again....I do not know for sure...I will let my head do the thinking for me and go where it dictates.

Dementia rules our life and everything we do revolves around taking care of my wife who has had dementia for the last five years. Right now my wife is asleep in the bed beside me...it is already 9.48 am and she will continue to sleep and rest in bed until she is ready to wake up..maybe in an hour's time...may be at noon or even at times, after noon. I will not be completely honest with myself if I did not say that I treasure these hours in the mornings when I can do as I like....after the house is put in order, the laundry done and the groceries taken care....then my breakfast ...and like today...after breakfast I make myself a short black or a cappuccino.......

......and then do what I want to do....read, TV or, like this morning....sit down and work on my blog.

I am totally out of touch with what is happening in K Hell...and to blog the way I do....the first thing I have to do is to acquaint myself with what is current in K Hell. This I will do after I have written this piece....for now let me say a few things that has been on my mind ever since I "stopped" blogging a few weeks back.

For those of you who have wondered...and some who have asked....if I stopped blogging because someone, somewhere have "made" me stopped....let me just say this....I really do not know what is the threshold of pain that I can endure before someone somewhere can make me stop blogging. Like most of you, there are two things I dislike : rejection and pain. So if enough pain is inflicted upon me and "rejection" is thrown into the whole conundrum...I might just flinched and be "persuaded" to stop blogging....but being many thousand of miles away from the "maddening crowd" in K Hell...I doubt if that can be done. And as for financial inducements to make me stop blogging....nothing has been offered that would remotely make me consider retirement or going over to the other side (whichever side that is!). So in short...no one, anywhere have had anything to do with me not blogging.

Now if you will excuse me....I will stop for now and go surf the Net to see what is happening in K Hell. Until I next put finger to keyboard again...hopefully sometime later this morning... lawan mesti lawan!

Melbourne : Malaysian Election Discussion Series #3

MAY25

Malaysian Election Discussion Series #3

Please join us for a roundtable with Zairil Khir Johari MP (Bukit Bendera, Penang) and YB Chua Yee Ling (Kuala Sepetang, Perak). They will speak about recent political realignments, voting issues and trust building between political parties in the opposition alliance ahead of GE14.

The 14th Malaysian general election (GE14) needs to be called by August 2018. Speculation is ripe that snap polls may be held as early as late 2017. This election will be critical in charting the future course of Malaysia, including our aspirations to overcome racial fragmentation and strengthen democratic governance. Recent political polarisations and realignments over 1MDB and RU355 have increased the stakes for GE14 further.

This discussion is part of our series of engagements with politicians from different political parties to hear first-hand their standpoints on key election issues and exchange views on our aspirations for a more inclusive, transparent and democratic polity in Malaysia. All Malaysians and friends of Malaysia are cordially invited to this roundtable proudly brought to you by Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia.

About the Speakers:

Zairil Khir Johari is a DAP Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera in Penang, a seat he won with a record majority in the 13th General Election in 2013. He is also the DAP Parliamentary Spokesperson for Education, Science and Technology. Zairil is currently DAP’s Assistant National Publicity Secretary, as well as the Vice-Chairman of DAP Penang. From 2012 to 2016, Zairil headed the Penang Institute, a state-funded public policy think tank based in Penang. http://www.zairil.com/

Chua Yee Ling is a PKR assemblyperson in the Perak State Assembly, representing the seat of Kuala Sepetang. In December 2015, she shed light on the issue of clearing of mangrove forests in Perak, where the Matang Mangrove Forest had been cleared to make way for a little known 'Kampung Tersusun' plan and the Kuala Sepetang Mangrove Forest, where land titles were to be released individually, although the area was supposed to be gazetted.

Reflections from 2013 : cakap cakap...too many Chinese in Melbourne.

First posted on Friday, December 13, 2013

There are too many Chinese in Melbourne! You cannot complain about there being too many Australian here…after all this is their country but everywhere you look in Melbourne, you will see Chinese. Small Chinese, big Chinese. Old Chinese and young Chinese. Chinese who speaks with an impeachable Australian twang and Chinese who yell at each other in spite of the fact that they are sitting right across each other in McDonald's. Yesterday when they were discussing about same sex marriage in Channel 7 there was even a male Chinese with his male Australian partner discussing their recent marriage! Aiyah!

In fact on the street where I live about the only place I can see more Australians than Chinese is in the Blue Chillis – a Malaysian Chinese restaurant. There are usually more Australians having dinner in that Chinese restaurant that there are Chinese having dinner!

uAuAAuthentic Malaysian hawker style cuisine, combine with contemporary cooking techniques and fresh local produce to create a menu that is robust, cleansing and balanced.
I have nothing against the Chinese but if I want to be surrounded by Chinese I might as well just stay in KL! It just get a bit too much when the post man is a Chinese and the staff at the nearby Post Office are also Chinese! And yes my next door unit neighbor is…..a Chinese too. Across the road is a laundry and thank God it does not belong to a Chinese…but right across the building is painted…..a Dragon! Chinese ma!

A Chinese is always behind the counter at the nearest 7 Eleven which common sense will tell you,….also belongs to  a Chinese. And it just dawn on me that our GP is also Chinese!

Do I feel threatened? Not threatened …but overwhelmed!

But that is Melbourne for you! Very cosmopolitan and very forgiving of anybody that stays here.

Yesterday I was in a long line waiting to get a Christmas hamper which was my due because I was a pensioner. An old Chinese guy wandered to the head of the line and tried to cut ahead of everyone else….and the Australians in the line gave him a real going over and made him understand that he was to go to the back of the line and wait his turn just like everyone else. A few minutes later an old Chinese lady rolled up with her trolley and took her place at the back of the line. The most vocal Australian guy who told off the old Chinese guy for cutting ahead of everybody went over to the old Chinese lady and gave up his place in the line so that she did not have to wait too long. I wish I had thought of doing that!

The Australian insists on a fair go for everybody and nothing gets them more upset than somebody trying to take advantage of a situation. They do not in any way feel threatened by the influx of Asians into Australia. This is because they know that most of the Asians that migrate to Australia can take care of themselves financially and contribute to the betterment of Australia. As for the refugees that have been granted entry into Australia even though they are poor and destitute the Australian feel an obligation to extend a helping hand to those less fortunate than themselves.

If I have any concerns in Australia it is for the young Australians who party too much, drink too much and are beginning to see how far ahead the Asians are when compared to them. This is a worrying development because these young people will grow up to resent the Asians. Already there have been instances when foreigners are accosted in public transport by these young Australians and told to go home…and at times are physically intimidated and attacked…but it would seems that their resentment is directed at anybody better than them rather than just at Asians….but this is a small price to pay to be able to live in Melbourne. A small price indeed.
