Tsvangirai apologises for 'sordid' marriage saga

Posted December 01, 2011 06:45:20
After two weeks of denial, Zimbabwe's prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai has confirmed he got married recently - but says he is now divorced.
For the past two weeks Mr Tsvangirai has been refusing to admit he married businesswoman Locadia Tembo, despite her family publicly stating otherwise.
Ms Tembo is reportedly pregnant with twins.
Now Mr Tsvangirai has released a statement confirming that the couple have divorced after two weeks of marriage, and condemning both the media and his ex-wife.
He said his marriage was hijacked from the start.
"Everything has been played in the press and I have become an innocent bystander in what is supposed to be my relationship," he said.
"I have become a spectator in this relationship and things are happening too fast, on camera and without my knowledge.
"This has led me to conclude that there is a greater and thicker plot around this issue which has undermined my confidence in this relationship."
Mr Tsvangirai has blamed state security for leaking details aimed at inflicting damage to his character.
He has also hit out at his wife of two weeks saying she did not meet the same standard as his late wife Susan, who was killed in a car crash two years ago.
Mr Tsvangirai has apologised to the nation for what he has called a "sordid saga".
