Brutal Woolongong Brawl

Judge releases CCTV footage of brutal Wollongong brawl
A judge has released brutal CCTV video depicting a group brawl at a Wollongong mall last year while sentencing three men in their early twenties to prison over the attack. Dennis Rousianos, 20, Raed Kalal, 21 and Vivek Trivedi, 21, have been jailed two-and-a-half to three years, over a bashing that left two teenage boys with vicious injuries. Released CCTV video of Saturday October 2, 2010 shows three men charging through the mall at night, eventually reaching another group of youths, who appear to be strangers and minding their own business. The scene devolves into a relentless attack that District Court Judge Paul Conlon called "an unprovoked, violent, vicious and sustained." A victim is tousled to the ground and king hit, then repeatedly punched and kicked in the body and face. The other victim is hit in the head, and knocked to the ground. According to media reports the two teenagers, Jared Pill and Bart Gilmore, sustained lacerations, bruises and swelling to their heads, one had a deviated nasal septum that did not require surgery. The trio pleaded guilty to two counts each of actual bodily harm in company, while Mr Rousianos also pleaded guilty to stealing the wallet and phone of one of his victims. According to reports, Judge Conlon rejected claims by the men that they were too drunk to understand their actions. Dennis Rousianos told the court that watching his brother get stabbed to death in Liverpool six years ago traumatised him, but judge Conlon rejected this as a mitigating circumstance. In response to the sentence handed down, father of attacker Raed Kalal told 7News, "He's a young kid and never been in trouble," but conceded that he felt sorry for his victims. One of the victims Bart Gillmore told 7News, "I just remember waking up, my mate there, thinking I was dead and then the police came straight after that." The three attackers will each serve a minimum non-parole sentence of 15 months jail, to expire in mid-late 2012, with an additional 15 months to be served on parole. WARNING: Some may find this video disturbing.

  1. The sentence is too light. Minimum 5 years not parole.

Of course the father of accused feels sorry only. Sorry is just a word. Ever think how the victim is traumatised.

Punishment and forgiving is a separate issue for those who thinks we must just forgive and forget.
