Kamilia was unhappy that she was not named by BN to contest the Kuala Kangsar federal seat. — File picKUALA KANGSAR, April 20 — In a shock move, Wanita Umno deputy chief Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim announced her resignation from all party posts today and will be contesting the Kuala Kangsar seat as an independent candidate.
Kamilia will face Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad and PAS’s Khalil Idham Lim in a three-cornered fight.
“I, Kamilia Ibrahim, have been approved by the Election Commission (EC) as an independent candidate for Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat, and with this I announce my resignation from Umno’s Supreme Council, Wanita Umno deputy chief, Kuala Kangsar Wanita Umno chief, and Umno member,” Kamilia wrote in a Facebook status update.
“Wait for the answers to all the riddles at my official outlet here,” she added, referring to her Facebook page.
On Thursday, Kamilia had expressed her disappointment that BN was not fielding her in the May 5 polls, saying it showed the coalition did not recognise the Umno wing’s contributions.
Kamilia had expected to be nominated for Kuala Kangsar where she is the wing’s division chief, especially after Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil declined to contest in Election 2013.

  1. One of the better moves seen of BN politicians so far. She has burnt her bridges but is promoting principles. Kamilia is going to hammer lembu sharizat to her advantage. This could be interesting watching!

  3. well done Kamilia! It is the height of absurdity and indecency for Umno leadership to exclude the national representation of women in Parliament. I say, WELL DONE , again, teach the PM and his male colleagues that the power of the rakyat does not only come from the men. If they do not want women in the Umno team and belittle the women, do not want Wanita Umno in Parliament, then Kamilia must lead the Wanita to withdraw all the support for their male colleagues. Empty talk from PM and his team that they will reserve 30% places in the senior civil servants positions for women. Men, you don't walk the talk, so you deserve to lose and lose badly. Leave it to Kamilia and her teammates to show that the power of the rakyat does not belong only to the men. Give them such a stinging defeat and they will fear to ignore and belittle the women in this country!

  4. In my humble view she should have accepted as an ADUN candidate in the first instance. If she wins, she may be appointed as an EXCO member and will contribute from there directly. On Federal matters she can still contribute via the UMNO Central Council in which she is a member. Also, may be later on, if the party leadership thinks it needs her at the Federal level, she can always be appointed as a Senator and may be as a Minister as well. Barisan had done something like that in the past in the case of Dr Marshita of Baling. Barisan had even appointed Musa Muhamad (a non-olitician) as a Minister via Senatorship. Not fielding her as a Parliamentary candidate should not have been treated as not recognizing the Wanita Wing's contribution. In view such a position is short-sighted. In politics (any where) toeing the party line and respecting the party leaderships is of utmost importance. Anyone who cant do this should make some realingnments in attitude. Burning the bridges behind her as she did may prove to be a setback or may curtail her political career greatly. It is all up to the voters of Kuala Kangsar constituency now!
