something's gotta give

Through apathy and hubris every Malaysian must share an individual responsibility for the mess our country is now in - politically and financially - and more importantly, we too share an individual responsibility for what Malaysia will be in the future. This was the message that Pakatan Rakyat under Anwar Ibrahim, Kit Siang, Karpal and TGNA impacted upon the electorate which resulted in them winning the  popular mandate to govern in the last general election. That Pakatan Rakaya is not in government is because Umno, over a period of 60 years in government, has put into place the means to hang on to government even without a popular mandate from the electorate.

Today that same Umno mind set has allowed it's president, a corrupt and irresponsible Najib Razak, to remain as prime minister of our nation despite the wishes of the people of Malaysia who wants to see him ousted as their leader - for Najib was never their popularly elected leader, nor has he proven himself worthy of being one.

Opposition to the manner Umno has conducted itself and disgust in the manner Najib Razak has reigned as prime minister have now  galvanized not only a critical mass outside Umno to agitate for change, but there is also a ground swell from within Umno that is about to merge with the forces outside Umno  - merge into a "core group"  - and united this "core group" will begin work in earnest to oust Najib Razak from public office and from Umno.

Leadership within this "core group" leaves no question that it has support at the highest level of dissent to Najib Razak. Tun Dr Mahathir Muhammad, Anwar Ibrahim, Wan Azizah and Lim Kit Siang. Just the mention of a union of these names has filled me with much hope and enthusiasm that this time around we are surely on the irreversible path towards responsible government. That  when all is said and done, good will prevail over evil, right over wrong and politics in Malaysia will be the better for it.

This is where we are at today: Friday 4th March 2016.

In my life time there have been some "national" events that have left a sense of national identity with me.

Merdeka in 1957.The formation of Malaysia and the subsequent leaving of it by Singapore. Konfrontasi with Indonesia. May 13th. NEP, Rukun Negara. The taking of hostages by the Japanese Red Army at the AIA building. Memali incident. Ops Lallang. the removal of Tun Salleh Abbas. KLIA, Petronas Towers. Dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim. Resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir. Altantuya. Pak Lah and then Najib as PM. 1MDB and then the RM2.6 billion donation.

Today's press conference between Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan...or with friends of Pakatan Harapan...would be another one of those "national events" that would be seen in one or two decades from now, as the moment when real and meaningful change to politics in Malaysia came of age.

Change to Umno, change to how government is to be conducted by the elected representatives of the people - who ever they may be. That change will put Malaysia irrevocably down the path where good triumphs over evil, where right always wins over wrong and where a sense of justice and fairness prevails in all things Malaysian.

For this, we must give thanks to Najib Razak and Rosmah : for are they not the reason this core group is meeting today?

Is that not ironic? ABU (anything but Umno) has not become ABNAR (anything but Najib and Rosmah!).

Let us pray that common sense and a sense of purpose will guide this "core group" to do what it must. Again, in my life time, I am privileged to live through another one of our nation's momentous moment and I wait with hope and trepidations for what is to come.

ALLAHUAKBAR!
