THE GUARDIAN : Malaysian prime minister accused of ‘dirty tricks’ as election looms

Laws redrawing electoral map and a crack down on ‘fake news’, have been hurriedly pushed through parliament by Najib Razak

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has been accused of resorting to “dirty tricks” and “downright cheating” in the run up to the general election, after he pushed through a series of laws which allegedly favour his party and target his critics.
Over the past week, two pieces of legislation – one which has redrawn the electoral map and the other which cracks down on so-called “fake news” – have been hurriedly pushed through parliament, bypassing widespread objections.
With parliament due to be dissolved on Friday and the election held soon after, regional experts described the legislation as “desperate measures” by Najib, whose election success is now far from assured.
“Najib is using the executive power and legislation to strengthen his hand,” said Bridget Welsh, a professor of political science at John Cabot University who specialises in Malaysian politics. Welsh described a “a reservoir of discontent with Najib“, and said the “excessive laws show insecurity and weakness going into this election”.

Najib has been prime minister since 2009, but in recent years his popularity has plummeted, due both to the international shame of the 1MDB corruption scandaland the handling of the still-missing MH370 plane, but also thanks to the rising cost of living in Malaysia. His election chances have also not been improved by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamed, who was once Najib’s mentor, re-entering the political fray at 92-years-old to lead the opposition coalition with a single-minded goal of toppling his former protege.
Gerrymandering and biased reorganisation of the electoral map have long been a tactic of ruling governments in Malaysia prior to an election, but the extent of the recent changes – up to 40% in some parliamentary constituencies – and the surreptitious manner in which it was pushed through has left many reeling.
The electoral commission, which is under Najib’s control, has been accused of vastly increasing mal-apportionment – when a system is skewed to prevent a large section of society being represented – to disenfranchise groups who traditionally vote for the opposition. Welsh said Malaysia now had one of the “worst cases of mal-apportionment in the world”.
Parliamentary constitutiencies usually won by parties in Najib’s ruling Barisa Nasional coalition have been made smaller, with an average of 48,000 voters – making it far easier to win the popular vote – while the seats usually held by the opposition now have an average of 79,000 voters. Nine out of the top ten largest constituencies are those usually held by the opposition.
Shahrul Aman, chair of BERSIH, an organistaion pushing for electoral reform, said they had identified seven major constitutional violations in the new delineation law. “It is covertly giving the upper hand to Barisa Nasional by downplaying the popular votes. The terrible fact that Malaysians have to face is that with only 16.5% of the popular vote, the current government can rule the country.”

The Malaysian constitution stipulates time must be given in the delineation process for voters to object, but Aman said they “bulldozed” the law through, calling on barely any of the tens of thousands who registered objections. A revised version of the delineation bill was put forward to appease objectors, with only 4% changes to constituencies, but many were shocked to find that when the legislation was tabled in parliament, the government simply went back to the first version.
“It is an attempt to steal the election,” said Aman. “Delineation has always been abused by the ruling government but this is definitely a progression, the downright cheating has been aggravated.”
Najib’s “fake news” bill, which was passed on Tuesday has been seen as equally alarming. It allows prison sentences of up to six years for spreading “fake news”, but many are concerned it will simply be used to crack down on critics of Najib, with the government given the power to decide what counts as fake news.
The US State department expressed concern at its possible infringement on freedom of speech, and Meredith Weiss, a specialist in south-east Asian politics, said: “Full stop, this anti-fake news law is not business as usual – this is extreme even for Malaysia.”
The law, which was given minimal scrutiny in parliament, also gave the government power to go after alleged fake news spread on popular messenger app Whatsapp. Whilst Whatsapp is encrypted and so virtually impossible for a government to monitor, it is still likely to create a climate of fear and self-censorship in Malaysia, said Weiss. Many in Malaysia have already reported a quietening down of outspoken voices on social media.
“It does seem like a pretty stark tightening of the reigns,” said Weiss. “It’s going to be a nasty campaign.”

cakap cakap....The IDIOT.

5.45 am. Early Saturday morning. Melbourne.

At this time of the day nothing disturbs the tranquillity of my surroundings except for the deafening silence that surrounds me, and the sometimes rumbling of the trams as they begin to ferry the people of Melbourne to work. It is too early for my morning Nescafe. Too late to think about getting a few more hours of sleep. And so I sit myself at my desk to think.

The audacity of this IDIOT latest caper...Bank Negara is now into Real Estate...blows my mind away. The ability of this IDIOT to still find an entity under his control that can shell out RM 2 billion cash to fund this IDIOT's mad schemes for cash and yet more cash, numbs my sensibilities.

"what is shell out: to pay money for something, especially when the cost is unexpected and not wanted"

The genius of this IDIOT wrapped sense of making Bank Negara go into the Real Estate business is simply breathtaking. I can only quote what MYR said of the whole caper :

The cruz of the buy...GOM (Government of Malaysia) PMN (Prime Minister Najib -  aka The IDIOT) needs the money to fill up depleted coffers....usage under GOM control....the rest irrelevant. (MYR)

MYR's observation is precise. Tepat. Spot on and impressive in the brevity of words used and yet expansive in describing what is now happening in our beloved country today. This IDIOT search for cash and yet more cash overcomes all other consideration.  Everything else is irrelevant to this IDIOT's need for money.

And the latest associate/willing accomplice/mangsa (strike out what you think is irrelevant) of this IDIOT's madness is Bank Negara and this man, it's Governor.

The Governor's complicity in this caper is to be measured. His duplicity to the people of Malaysia and to Bank Negara in allowing this IDIOT to follow through with this caper is to be assessed.....and more worrying for the future of Bank Negara.... will this Governor have the gumption to remain independent and dedak free as Governor even  as this IDIOT continues his relentless foray into whatever cash that Bank Negara still has, to satisfy this IDIOT's need for money. Money to pay IPIC, money to put into his personal coffers, money to fund the coming elections and money for the sake of money.

All this is in now my head. It has been so since 5 am when my sleep was disturbed. It is now 7.40 AM and it is still swirling around in my head. Can you now understand why I cannot sleep?

But who needs sleep when I need to put these thoughts onto my blog and FB page so that we can try and get some clarity as to what other hare brained scheme this IDIOT is coming up with to get himself "cashed up" for PRU 14.

Bank Negara is his latest cash cow. Why is it so? What has happened to make this possible?

You need a compliant Bank Governor, a compliant Deputy Bank Negara Governor, and among other things, a compliant Bank Negara Board of Governors! The golden question now is simply this : " Has this IDIOT got all that in place in Bank Negara? Is there nobody in Bank Negara who is prepared to stand up and say "This is wrong!". Was that not the reason why the long serving senior official at Bank Negara, Deputy Governor  Dr Sukudave Singh resigned...because he felt he had a moral responsibility to not allow Bank Negara and himself, be part of this IDIOT's mad dash for cash cash and more cash?
  1. www.thestar.com.my/business/business-news/2017/11/29/sukhdaves-parting-shot/Cached
29 Nov 2017 ... PETALING JAYA: A long-serving senior official at Bank Negara Malaysia, Dr Sukudhew (Sukhdave) Singh, in his parting shot said “leadership is a responsibility and not a ... Sukhdave's resignation comes more than a year ahead of his term as deputy governor, which is supposed to end in April 2019.

The truth of the matter will be outed in time to come. For now, another institution we once considered a "sacred cow" ...Bank Negara...has bit the dust. There can be no greater pain for us all then the thought that this IDIOT has once again triumph in his dastardly deed of milking this beloved country of ours, dry. Maybe this pain we can endure....maybe not. Suffice to say that with every ringgit that this IDIOT manages to add to the growing pile of political spoils he has so far accumulated, his time in office draws to an end.

Today it is Bank Negara....tomorrow what else will this IDIOT come up with? And do not forget that Najib Razak may be an IDIOT...but he is our IDIOT!

And in closing, I share with you MYR thoughts on what is to come : "Soon all the areas where there were G quarters before, to be sold...as u are aware bro Hussein Abdul Hamid...there r pockets of better pieces around Jln Duta n the vicinity...Federal Hill gone...these areas easily RM1k per sq foot..."

Enough said.

Najib...he cannot talk and think at the same time!

Early in October, in conversation with an Umno stalwart, I asked him what he thought Najib's chances were in the coming PRU 14....and by that I meant not only of Najib's chances in leading Umno into the next general election, but also of Umno's chances in winning it.  His answer mirrored mine :

"Well, if Najib keeps up on his blunders, there'll be a real swing of public opinion and Mahathir may have a chance of winning the next GE, in spite of the current Pakatan Harapan's weaknesses".

I think the writting is on the wall for Najib....or should I say the writting and drawing is on the wall for Najib?

Even with Rosmah watching him like a Hawk and pulling the strings for him to do this and that...Najib is still quite capable of making himself into what he really is - a stupid idiot punching way above his class.

We have seen him publicly making himself into an ass too many times in the past when he was left to his own devices. Najib singing with Duterte is a classic Najib moment frozen in time for all of us to painfully watch Najib thinking himself capable of doing more then one thing at any one time... in this case singing and dancing.

And yesterday again...he showed us that he is simply unable to speak and think at the same time! It is okay when things are scripted ...but when he speaks off the cuff...he comes up with that "Kepala bapak engkau!"....so unbecoming of a prime minister! Enough said.

The Washington Post : Trump’s hosting of Malaysia’s prime minister marks another setback for the rule of law

 Global Opinions
When President Trump hosts Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak at the White House next week, he may find he has quite a lot in common with the Southeast Asian leader, who is a nationalist with authoritarian tendencies. But that doesn’t mean rolling out the red carpet for him is a good idea.
The similarities between the two leaders are striking. Both Trump and Najib are wrapped up in major investigations that involve the U.S. Justice Department. Both have fired top law enforcement officials in their own governments to try to influence those investigations. Both play politically toward their rural, ethnically homogeneous base and use nationalist rhetoric to stir up anger against their more urban, ethnic opposition. Both men won their last election despite losing the popular vote. Both love golf, and they even played together once.
Of course, Najib’s authoritarian power grab is worse than anything Trump has done. While Trump has only called for his political opposition to be jailed, in Malaysia critics of the government are routinely imprisoned. While Trump uses mere rhetoric to undermine the credibility of the free media, Najib uses criminal law to silence them. While Trump may wish for more compliant judicial and legislative branches, in Malaysia all checks and balances on executive power have been essentially stamped out.
“I suspect Trump wishes he had the tools that Najib has at his disposal,” said Human Rights Watch’s Asia Advocacy Director John Sifton. “President Trump I’m sure would enjoy having the capacity to shut down any newspaper he doesn’t like.”
Najib will have to stand for election sometime in the next few months, which is why this White House visit is so important to him. Engulfed by allegationshe pilfered billions from his own country’s sovereign wealth fund, he craves international legitimacy. As the Justice Department works to seize more than $1 billion in stolen funds they allege Najib, his stepson and one of his friends have stashed in the United States, his visit to Washington is meant to show the scandal is not harming his world standing.
Najib has cultivated good relations with the U.S. government for years. President Barack Obama golfed with him, too. Trump’s hospitality, including a White House visit, will send a clear signal to Malaysians that his administration, like its predecessors, won’t push back against the rollback of democracy, rule of law and human rights there.
National security officials in Washington always make the same argument when the uncomfortable subject of Najib’s authoritarianism and alleged criminality is raised: It’s certainly in America’s interest to partner with Malaysia on counterterrorism, build security ties to respond to an increasingly aggressive China, and deepen bilateral trade and investment. But those are arguments for dealing with Malaysia, not for working with Najib himself.
There’s no reason his opposition wouldn’t be interested in fighting terrorism and increasing security cooperation with the United States. For now, that opposition is on the defensive, but it very well could take power in the coming years.
“The message the White House is sending is that it pays to be a kleptocrat and that the largest asset seizure in the history of the Department of Justice doesn’t seem to matter much in the great scheme of things,” said Nurul Izzah Anwar, a member of Parliament and the daughter of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who sits in prison on politically motivated charges.
Nurul’s party has allied with her father’s former political nemesis, former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. They have little confidence Najib will face justice at home. Perhaps the only chance for accountability is if the United States and other countries keep up the pressure.
“In Malaysia, Najib is beyond legal reproach, so we are relying on institutions worldwide to ensure that the crimes against the Malaysian people will be punished,” Nurul said. “It’s not just about Najib alone. We need to ensure the culture of impunity doesn’t permeate throughout the world.”
Trump likes strong leaders and has said repeatedly he won’t lecture foreign countries on American values. Therefore it falls to Congress, the human rights community and others to make sure that both Najib and Malaysians know that America still cares about Malaysian democracy.
It’s smart policy to acknowledge the opposition’s grievances now, because after the next turn of the screw it may be too late to convince Malaysians that Washington is an honest broker. The needed balance between security imperatives and standing up for universal rights is currently far out of whack.
In the long term, Malaysia’s value as a reliable and stable ally depends on it being an open society that abides by international law and norms and tolerates dissent. Trump’s hosting of Najib represents a setback for that objective.

(Jho Low DISAHKAN pemilik syarikat Good Star Limited)

27 Feb 2009- Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) ditubuhkan dibawah naungan Sultan Terengganu. (Pak Lah PM)
25 Mac 2009- Lembaga Pengarah TIA telah memberi kuasa kepada En. Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi (CEO TIA) untuk mengesahkan perlantikan Aminvestment Bank (Ambank) sebagai Lead Arranger and/ or lead manager and primary subscriber untuk cadangan terbitan RM5 bilion Islamic Medium Term Notes (IMTN).
(Laporan PAC m/s 8)

(PAC m/s 13)
9 Jun 2009- Jho Low membuka akaun syarikat Good Star Limited miliknya di bank RBS Coutts cawangan Singapura. (DOJ m/s 18)
Julai 2009- Kementerian Kewangan mengambil alih TIA
September 2009- TIA ditukar menjadi 1MDB. TS Bakke dilantik sebagai Pengerusi Lembaga Pengarah (Laporan DOJ m/s 16)
Walaupun Jho Low tiada sebarang jawatan dalam 1MDB namun Jho Low terlibat antaranya;

(PAC m/s 30 & 31)

11 Oktober 2009- TS Mohd Bakke sekali lagi meletak jawatan dan beliau digantikan dengan TS DS Che Lodin bin Wok (PAC m/s 16) (https://sg.news.yahoo.com/bakke-resigned-twice-1mdb-chairma…)
11 Oktober 2009- Tan Sri Azlan bin Mohd Zainol dilantik sebagai Ahli Lembaga Pengarah 1MDB.
11 Januari 2010- TS Azlan letak jawatan dari 1MDB. (PAC m/s 16)
(DOJ m/s 39)
25 Oktober 2011- 1MDB membuat pindahan terakhir ke akaun Good Star sebanyak USD125 juta dari akaunnya di Ambank menjadikan jumlah keseluruhan bayaran kepada syarikat Good Star Limited milik Jho Low adalah USD1.030 BILION. (DOJ m/s 36)
Semua pemindahan wang dilakukan melalui AKAUN BANK KORESPONDEN di Bank Amerika Syarikat iaitu J.P. Morgan Chase. (DOJ m/s 36)
Nantikan pendedahan seterusnya iaitu Fasa kedua dari keseluruhan 4 fasa dimana sebanyak USD1.367 bilion lagi dirompak dari 1MDB pada Fasa Aabar-BVI ini dimana Najib mendapat sebanyak USD30 juta lagi sementara anak Rosmah iaitu Riza Aziz mendapat sebanyak USD238 juta)
