SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Hospital officials say the captain of a Chinese fishing vessel was killed in a clash with the South Korean coast guard after his boat was stopped for suspected illegal fishing.
An emergency room worker at the Mokpo Hankook Hospital said Friday that the 45-year-old Chinese national died at around 11.30am about 30 minutes after he arrived by helicopter. The hospital did not immediately announce the cause of death.
Coast guard official Kim Hye-gyeong says a South Korean guardsman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun after he violently resisted the inspection. Kim says the victim’s boat was 78 miles (125 kilometers) into South Korean waters near the island of Wangdeungdo when it was stopped.
Kim says it wasn’t immediately known whether there were other injuries.
