Sodomy II: Defence closes, prosecution to apply for rebuttal witnesses

KUALA LUMPUR: The defence team in the sodomy trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim closed its case Monday. . . He faces a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping if convicted.

Well, first of all, if he is convicted, he wont get whipped - I think the age factor plays a part. But what happened to their defense of alibi? This is very, very, very strange.

In the first and second trials the defense was conspiracy. In this third trial the defense was alibi. They said that they would be calling solid alibis (who were playing mahjong and eating putu mayam at the relevant time??). What happened to those alibis?

The silly trick to waste the Courts time and subpoena the Prime Minister and his wife was shot to pieces. The PM applied to the Court to set aside the silly subpoena - which was granted in like five minutes. The former IGP and also the Melaka Police Chief (Rodhwan) did NOT apply to the Court to set aside the subpoena. They were ready and willing to come to Court. But they too were not called. Apa pasal?

But the most puzzling is the defense's own list of witnesses. There were 13 alibi witnesses. And here is the most famous one among them :

"Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail is among the alibi witnesses listed in her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case. Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said in a statement here that Dr Wan Azizah's name was the first name among 13 in the alibi notice submitted by legal firm S.N. Nair and Partners."

'Dr Wan Azizah's name was the first name among 13 in the alibi notice'. So what happened? Even the wife was an alibi witness. But they did not call her to testify.

Takkan Wan Azizah also applied to the Court to set aside her subpoena to testify ? I dont think so. Pasal apa they refuse to call even their Number 1 alibi witness? And what about their 12 other alibi witnesses? Apa pasal tak mahu panggil?

Is it because all the alibi witnesses were planning to tell the truth? Thats what all witnesses should do - they must tell the truth. Which I am sure all the alibi witnesses would have done. So why drop them? Or is that why they were dropped?
