Malaysian PM defends treatment of refugees
Malaysia's prime minister has rejected suggestions refugees are mistreated in his country and has argued for the Federal Government's scuttled people swap deal to be revived.
Today I was watching the news and listening to what each of the CHOGM participant had to say when Najib came on. He went on about the recently aborted Malaysia Australian Refugee Solution and paid particular emphasis on his pet peeve: That the Australian Press has misrepresented Malaysia’s treatment of refugees. He insisted that the refugees in Malaysia were treated very well and there was no reason for the Australian press to say otherwise.
Maybe he could have got away with saying so if he was back in Kuala Lumpur but in the last few months the Australian people have been saturated with TV and Media coverage of how Malaysia treats its refugee. They have been seeing images of crowded camps, unpalatable food served on dirty plates and in still dirtier surroundings and refugees living in condition that the Australians can only understand to be conditions found only in “third world” countries.
Repeatedly they have seen images of refugees treated roughly by the authorities and they have seen how RELA operates when they go after these illegal refugees - always in the dead of night or early morning and always treating these refugees worse then animals.
And they have seen images of refugees being whipped.
Now the news in Australia is for local consumption not for a Malaysian audience. So you can just imagine how the Australian Public will take to Najib saying what he said about the refugees in Malaysia. I am not angry neither am I upset at Najib for lying about something the Australian people know so well….but I am ashamed that our Prime Minister lied.
